Level Five: Wraparound Support
Strategies:
1.)Develop a Positive Behavior Support Plan:
As an Instructor I need to work together with a team inclusive of my student to find out why a disruptive behavior is occurring and how I can best remedy the situation. This process focuses on finding the root cause for a behavior and determining what need is not being fulfilled so that the instructor, student, and parents can work together to make sure that this need is being met.
2.) Understand IEP's and 504's:
I will again work to make sure that I talk with every caseworker and every aide to get a complete picture of all aspects of the IEP's and 504's that my students may have. With this information I will research ways to differentiate for these students or to build in Universal design to meet their needs. It will also give me the opportunity to brainstorm any possible solutions for behavioral issues that may arise late. Knowledge is power and will help me to understand the underlying reasons for a behavior versus taking the behavior personally or reacting.
3.) Stay Conscious of the MTSS or Multi-tiered System of Support:
A MTSS is a way that schools are trying to provide support for all students and to meet all needs. This approach differs from an RTI in that it focuses not just on the academic side of the equation but also on the social, behavioral, and community aspect of school life. This approach asks educators to be aware and willing to work with a whole team of people including parents, aides, caseworkers, administrators, or even the student themselves in order to provide all the support needed to proved a free and adequate public education. (Hurst, 2014).
