Level 4: Somewhere Else Plan
Strategies:
1.) Being Knowledgeable of My Students:
From the very beginning of the year I will make it a priority to understand all the facets of my students with IEP's and 504 plans so that I can make sure to have all the proper accommodations in place and plans to fulfill all of my students needs. I will also make it a point to have a meeting with every caseworker to discuss any strategies that have been especially effective, or ineffective before. If I have an aide in the classroom I will start by having them give me as much information as possible on those students and brainstorm possible strategies with the aide. (Kagan, Kyle, & Scott, 2004).
2.) Create a Planning Room:
I would talk to staff about where and how to facilitate a planning room so that whenever a student can't resolve a conflict or calm down within the classroom they have a safe, calm place to go to plan. At my current school site the classrooms are situated around common rooms that are referred to as pods. If I had an aide in the classroom we could utilize this pod as the planning room and have the aide and the student go into the pod in order to strategize about how to recover and come back into the classroom. (Villa, Thousand, Nevin, 2010).
3.) Having Two Teachers:
Whether in the future if I have an aide in the classroom, or in my current setting where we have a Co-Teaching model if there are two adults in the room then it becomes much easier to have a student step out for a few minutes to regain composure or to plan on how to transform a conflict so that they can rejoin the class and continue learning. This is a benefit because it allows the student to literally step away from the conflict without having to single them out by placing them into a cool down area. (Elsbree, 2014).
